What is VoIP?
VoIP converts the voice signal from your telephone or microphone into a digital signal that travels over the internet and then converts back to voice at the receiver's end.Up until a couple of years ago, VoIP generally meant wearing a headset hooked up to a computer connected to the internet, and talking to another person also sitting by a computer --hardly the most natural way to make a phone call!
Today, the options include dual-mode cordless phones that can be used as either a VoIP phone or with a normal landline, free VoIP calling on your mobile phone with some plans and the ability to use a wireless (Wi-Fi) telephone device to make free VoIP calls when in a Wi-Fi area or hotspot. Using an analogue telephone adapter (ATA) you can even make VoIP calls using your current landline phone.
Disadvantages compared to a landline include no support for a fax machine, variable voice quality and no widespread support for 000 emergency calls. In the event of a power outage, you’ll lose the ability to make calls because you’ll lose your internet connection — just like you can’t use a cordless phone in a power cut. |
